Come On Over & Knock On Erykah's Door

The reigning Queen of SoulBounce was featured in the New York Times' Music Section yesterday, and this lengthy article on Erykah Badu was quite revealing. Up until this point, we have been privy to snippets of information, but thankfully this spread helped to put it all in perspective.

Not only was the interview conducted in Badu's Brooklyn digs, but we got a glimpse of her home which she fancies to a "museum" since it houses various costumes and her several wigs, as well as projects by her two children, Seven and Puma. Interestingly enough, it was her son, Seven, who introduced her to music application GarageBand (awww!), and ?uestove who bought Badu her first laptop as a gift.
Most revealing is her disclosure that may have spawned the Mama's Gun opening track "Penitentiary Philosophy." Regarding her "Queen of Neo-Soul" designation post-Baduizm: "I felt like a failure...I hated that because what if I don't do [Neo-Soul] anymore? What if I change? Then that puts me in a penitentiary." Good thing for Erykah that she gave into her need for change or else we wouldn't have her latest opus New Amerykah. More hints were made at the USB Flash drive that would be accompanying her latest release, but no word yet on its availability to the masses.
