The Roots Want You To Be Their ‘Birthday Girl’

the_roots_icegrill.jpg

After this Friday's release of the The Roots' video "Get Busy" which was described by some of you as "uncouth," "bananas," and just straight up "dope," comes word that their lead single from their tenth effort, Rising Down, will be "Birthday Girl" featuring Patrick Stump from the pop-punk rock band Fall Out Boy. I'm going to keep my opinion to myself, but I swear sometimes The Roots hook me, reel me in, then completely lose me. But, like I said, I'm keeping my opinion to myself. Judge for yourself below.

  1. I'm not feeling this. At all.

  2. um, it ain't just you. Sounds like this track wasn't even mastered. Love'em still;just like how out of all of Cody Chestnutt's tracks they chose "The Seed" Cody had an album with some great material, and that was by far not the best. hmm.

  3. @ al:
I second your opinion about The Roots' choice to use "The Seed" from Cody Chestnutt's amazing debut album. "The Seed" was a great track, but was lessened IMO by Black Thought rhyming over it.

  4. I gave it a couple spins. Its growing on me. Its a little different but I wouldnt say its horrible. Its a good third single. Regardless, i think that this is going to be a dope Roots album altogether.
Wow, I just re-read the post...definitely not LEAD single material...

  6. Sounds like a Mark Ronson mash-up.

  7. I actually like the song and the vibe. I always expect anything out of the norm from The Roots. That's why I am such a huge fan of The Roots. You just never know what you will hear from them.

  8. Not feeling it off the break but as a Roots stan I'm obligated to give it some more time to sink in. My initial feeling is that it's purely a ploy for chart and pop love, which I'm not mad at since these cats have been in the game forever and still don't sell any records.
If ultimately I decide that this tune is a stinker, I've still got my hopes up that it'll be the only fast forward moment on Rising Down.
I don't think 75 Bars and Get Busy were actually singles, just a couple raw joints leaked out to get their base excited. Birthday Girl is not for their base.
As for The Seed 2.0? I feel like The Roots mashed that joint, although I never listened to Headphone Masterpiece in its entirety.

  9. ?uesto posted on OKP that this song is to keep the lights on, so to speak.
They're hoping it generates some pop buzz and moves some extra units.
It's not for the base, necessarily.
I don't think it was by accident that "75 Bars" and "Get Busy" leaked first with videos.
If "Birthday Girl" surfaced first --- there would have been a Roots uprising.
