Look, we can gripe and moan about the use of Auto-Tune and the Vocoder until we're blue in the face but, although they are closely related, there are marked differences between the two. Mainly, Auto-Tune is intended for pitch-correction and smoothing out vocal inaccuracies. It's only when your current favorite rapper pushes the tool's levels to it's limits that we get Rosie the Robot. The Vocoder, probably for as long as we can remember, has been used as a special effect. So when someone like Q-Tip says he prefers one over the other, don't get all ignorant.
