'The Best Of Chess Records' Offers Originals of Songs in the Upcoming Film 'Cadillac Records'

chess_records.jpgWhen the track list for the Cadillac Records soundtrack was released, we pondered whether or not it would deliver in the face of some questionable covers and makeovers. Capitalizing on the building interest in the music and label, Chess Records, that inspired the film, MCA (Chess/UMe) has put together a compilation album of hits produced by Chess. Home to the greats depicted in the film like Chuck Berry and Etta James, the catalogue for Chess Records is extensive and teems with fantastic songs from the 50s, 60s, and even 70s. While the Cadillac Records soundtrack cannot help but be listenable given its source material, to get a taste of the real thing would definitely be more satisfying. Because let's face it, no amount of wigs or period costumes could ever beat the original brilliance of "At Last" or "(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man." [MW]
