Who Is Hip Hop’s Best Singer?

hip-hop-singers.jpgWhen it comes to singing hooks on a Hip Hop track, there is a certain skill required that doesn't always follow the same rules as singing a song that lasts three to four minutes. Given that the singer is not the person with the most time on the track, you have to be able to burn from the moment the hook is laid over the melody. Keeping this in mind, glancing over the list of "Top 10 Hip-Hop Singers" which places Nate Dogg squarely at number one with credits given to Lauryn Hill and Cee-Lo, I am going to simply chalk this list's omissions up to the authors' preference. After all, T-Pain (side-eye activated) is at number three after Pharrell and Andre 3000. Thank goodness that TJ Swann is mentioned at all since quite a few music consumers have probably never heard of his name. Noticably absent are Queen of Hip Hop Soul Mary J. Blige (really?) and K-Ci & JoJo who really killed it on hot tracks by Gang Starr ,Tupac, and Father MC who were both featured on tracks by him. Do we also have time to mention the much maligned R Kelly, Faith, and Crystal Johnson? Check out the list here and let us know whether you agree or disagree with the choices and if anyone else is noticeably absent from this list of Hip Hop's great hooksters.

  1. Lets stop the madness Mary J should be on this list possibly at # 1, Blues Raspberry from the Wu makes my list as does, Vinia Mojica, Sleepy Brown, Nate dogg, KC & Jojo and the entire group Total.

  2. I think Faith's been on more hooks than most of these folks. Nate Dogg & Pharrell may be the only two with more 'features' than her.
They never show this chick love....why?! She's so ILL! =)
    *my two cents*

  3. Faith is maligned? Really? Most folx I know love and miss her... as I do.

  4. Hands down Lauryn Hill... no one can belt out a hook like her
Mary J is a close second

  5. Lil Mo is one of my personal faves not mentioned.

  6. Avatar

I have to go with Lil Mo and Mary. There are also a couple joints that Coko from SWV sang on that were hot.

  7. Lauryn Hill (pre-crazy though)

  8. Is this list only about songs that came out in the 90? As much as I am a product of that time, most of the artists mentioned haven't been featured on hooks much since that time. With that said, mary should top the list, hands down. She is the only one still in demand now.

  9. I agree that Nate Dogg should be in the #1 spot, he's been on the hook of damn near every west coast hip hop song that's come out in the last 15 years. Some east coast stuff too, remember that one track with Ghostface produced by Mark Ronson, and the Pharoah Monch/Mos Def track too. It's a toss up between him, Mary, and Faith for me. I personally think LaToiya Williams should have been included, she has an amazing voice and had been on hooks for Snoop, Busta, et al. Totally underrated.

  10. MJB has gotta make an appearance on anyones list ... she is the 1st to come to mind for me!
Also Chrisette Michele, okay so she hasn't featured on that many but she has killed everyone that she has appeared on!

  11. I like Cee-Lo and all, but I'm kinda stuck on the tie between him and Lauryn Hill........REALLY? And why Pharrell is even included while so many others didn't even get an honorable mention is just laughable...I guess Kanye is next.

  12. Two of my favorite modern-day 'hook'ers are Marsha Ambrosius & Chrisette Michele. Marsha's been in high-demand for a few years now.

  13. Are you guys serious? Mary J hands down!
