Bounce-Worthy: noon:30

Many can thank acts like Living ColourSaul Williams and Janelle Monáe for making it known that black folks choose to create music in genres other than R&B and hip hop. The all-girl group noon:30 out of Washington, DC is among those rising stars that will further solidify that point as they conquer the Nation's Capital and surrounding cities with shows that display how soul can be found in places you'd least think to look. Creating an aura of sophisticated afro-punk with Aissa Arroyo-Hill on guitar and the fiery Vivianne A. Njoku on drums, the group becomes edgy with the rock-child Blue S. Moon on vocals, sporting the customary mohawk that belies a voice that effortlessly strays from angelic to punk shrill. Check out their tune "Orphane" that didn't make it to their 2009 EP, And So It Is, but is a crowd favorite as Blue's haunting vocals float deftly over the unrelenting energy Aissa and Vivianne bring instrumentally. I predict big things for these ladies as our boundaries between genres continue to blur and folks become wise to the notion that good music knows no bounds.
