John Legend & The Roots Do ‘Write’ Live

As many of you know, John Legend and The Roots released Wake Up! this past Tuesday. Some of you may have also know that tonight Spike Lee will be directing a live performance of theirs via John's Vevo channel starting at 9PM EST. To get you properly in the mood, make sure you check out a recent live performance of their cover of Bill Withers' "I Can't Write Left-Handed" about the Vietnam War, all the more poignant now that this country finds itself embroiled in more overseas battles with no actual end in sight.

  1. Chills. This gives me chills.

  2. They should have lead with this one.
Which makes a point. If you are making a project with a vision. "Don't sneak the vision in". IMHO thats what weighed down Ra heems "Masterpiece". The social songs were masterpieces. The love songs were just that, love songs. The party songs diluted the vision.

  3. That was awesome. And I wasn't expecting it to be because I wasn't a fan of the first single and John Legend's voice isn't my favorite. His delivery on this was great though and the whole band worked together nicely. I've actually never heard the original so I'm looking for it now.

  4. i'm with philip clark... this gives me CHILLS. i actually bought my copy on wednesday, and listened to this song yesterday evening. by the time i got to the end of the song, all i could do was cry hot, black man tears. i was that moved--frustrated, ashamed, saddened, pissed off by the state of the world and my lack of action. mission accomplished, y'all.

  5. Man, I wanted to like this but I just couldn't get past Legend's voice and felt it was all trying a little hard.
