Bounce-Worthy: Jae Franklin

After doing a little homework on Jae Franklin, I must admit I'm a quite intrigued by her. She has two EPs to her name, Universal Language - Prelude 1 and Universal Language - Prelude 2, both of which are available for free, and she is gearing up to release a full album, again for free, on March 1st. What initially caught my eye was the fact that her Bandcamp includes the description "Soprano Sade Adu," a brave statement indeed. What solidified my intrigue, though, was the sheer variety of sounds/styles/genres contained on the EPs.

Take Prelude 1, for example. The intro is worked around an extended remix of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You," whereas the second song is a cover of Herbie Hancock's "Butterfly." On Prelude 2, she incorporates music from Fela Kuti, covers Jamiroquai's "Morning Glory," teams up with 4hero on "Vernas & Vedras," and lays her own vocals over the instrumental of Little Dragon's "Twice." Just the thought of trying to put a label on her made my head spin, and that's the beauty of her music. Sure it contains elements of downtempo, soul, jazz and Latin, but the whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Take a listen to the title track from her upcoming full length album, Always Needed You, below as well as her Jamiroquai cover, and if you like what you're hearing be sure to download both.
