Dee-1 Reminisces On 'The One That Got Away'

We've all had one. That one person who, no matter how much time passes, you just can't seem to let go of. Regardless of how things ended, Mr./Ms. Woulda Coulda Shoulda just has a way of popping up when you least expect it. Well, New Orleans rapper Dee-1 put those feelings into rhyme in his latest video, "The One That Got Away," taken from his I Hope They Hear Me (Vol. 2) mixtape. Leaning heavily on the keys from the Carl Thomas classic "I Wish," Dee pours his heart out to a newly engaged almost-soulmate. Now I'll admit that when I first saw Mannie Fresh's name attached to the song, my first instinct was to run the other way. While his musical handiwork provided the beat to many of my high school memories, as a 30-something woman, there aren't many things he's done to catch my attention in recent years, in addition to the fact that I don't listen to much rap these days. Consider this girl happy I didn't listen to my erroneous first mind. Although his N.O. accent is undeniable, Dee's flow is light years ahead of the type of rap normally associated with New Orleans. And it definitely doesn't hurt that he's easy as hell on the eyes (oh, if only I were 10 years younger!). At any rate, I have no problem admitting that I was slow to hop onboard the Dee-1 love train; lucky for me, I'm glad he finally made it onto my radar. If he's just making his way onto yours, head over to his website to download his latest mixtape.
