Bounce-Worthy: Six60

We here at SoulBounce are well aware that "judging a book by its cover" can lead to missing out on a host of great music. Just think about it, what does a soul singer look like nowadays? The days of Erykah and her headwraps or Maxwell and his trademark 'fro are far behind us, and it's a much more interesting musical landscape for it. That said, I was nearly guilty of committing just such a sin when I came across the New Zealand band Six60. To me they looked like a host of lite-rock bands the world over, but thanks to one of my pet hates -- the dreaded "autoplay" -- a visit to their website convinced me otherwise. I wasn't completely off the mark when I shamefully pigeon-holed them as a rock act, for there is surely more than a little of it in the mix, but it's far from the whole story. Six60 combine the aforementioned with great big helpings of soul, funk, dub/reggae, and even sprinklings of dub-step and drum 'n' bass to create their very own niche sound in the process. Their debut, self-titled album was released in New Zealand back in October but at the moment it seems that, unless you are there or in Australia, you are going to have a hard time getting hold of a copy. Hopefully that will change very soon, but in the meantime check out "Forever" and "Don't Forget Your Roots" below, then head on over to their official site where you can hear snippets of all the album's tracks.
