Serato Honors 'Icon,' Artist, DJ Erykah Badu

The great thing about Erykah Badu is her constant shapeshifting -- when you launch a Badu video (interview, performance, or promo clip), you never know what Badu look you're gonna get. And if it's in an interview or performance setting, you never know what version of her ever-evolving, multi-monikered intro to expect. It's exciting for its unexpectedness, but refreshing in that she doesn't reek of try-hard. Much like her albums, every Badu sighting is a new, interesting take on a familiar constant.

Here, as part of the Icon Artist Series from DJ software giant Serato, Badu explains her process as a "selector" and her development as a DJ. Her deep affinity for hip hop, itself easily missed until about a decade ago by those who would brand her a latter-day Billie Holiday, is addressed along with the differences in her experiences behind the mic and behind the decks: "I select what I like," she says with a smile. "Either they love it, or they learn it."

Her recording and DJ careers aren't as different as she may think.
