Bounce-Worthy: Carmen Smith

Australian soul singer Carmen Smith became close to a household name Down Under after appearing this year on the local version of The Voice. However, she was swiftly disqualified for appearing in a music video with a prominent Australian artist. While her reality TV experience may have been short-lived, Smith had already made her mark. She caught my eye a few years ago her thanks to her soulful voice and stunning appearance. In fact, I remember seeing her singing backing vocals with another Australian artist and feeling that she stole the show with her effortlessly cool stage persona. I wanted to know who she was and why she wasn't the one in the lime light. All this before I had even heard her sing the lead.

As you can guess, once I heard some of the tracks from Smith's self-titled debut album released in 2007 and her 2011 acoustic album, Ever Known, I was hooked. That voice, with the ability to be smooth and serene and then kick easily into the next gear, causing the hairs on the back of my neck to stand on end, deserved to be heard. Her music, with a decidedly pop feel is also unapologetically soulful. When the classic R&B styling of her music is coupled with her dynamic voice, pure contemporary soul/pop brilliance is the result. Exceptional tracks like "We Can Work It Out" and her cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" cemented Smith in my mind as one of the rising Australian soul singers to keep an ear out for.

This week, Smith has released her track "Polaroid" for free (yes, FREE!) via her website. The guitar led "Polaroid" is an emotional ode to Smith's father that will leave you misty eyed. In addition to downloading "Polaroid," check out the live performance of "We Can Work It Out" below. If that doesn't automatically have you hopping over to her website and giving her complete body of work a listen, then I'm sure the lure of free music should do the trick.
