Late last month, we introduced you to singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Ayo Olatunji, who is better known as I/O, and his mixtape Isolation. With its trippy mix of soul and hip hop, the mixtape prompted our very own Butta to coin the phrase "new soul wave" to describe the sound that I/O was laying down. Now, I/O has returned with yet another killer track called "You Slay Me." The moody, atmospheric groove of the song is in line with the material featured on Isolation, but allows his smooth voice to shine much more than it previously had. I/O, along with other artists like Rochelle Jordan, Frank Ocean, Miguel, The Weeknd and others, seems to be ushering a newer sound in R&B that embraces electronic influences and unconventional songwriting/structure without sacrificing the soul that is at the heart of the music.
