Azealia Banks Takes Us Back To '1991'

Never in a million years did I ever think that hip-house would make a comeback, but Azealia Banks is leading the one-woman wave. Her EP 1991 contains nothing but songs that mash-up her hip-hop flows with tracks that are straight up throwback house music grooves. Having lived through and loved the hip-house era, I have to say that she sounds very authentic but with an updated twist thanks to her rapid-fire delivery and colorful language. Her on-point presentation has carried over to the visuals for the songs from 1991, with the music video for the EP's title track (not to mention fourth and final song) surfacing this weekend. Banks tweeted yesterday that she was channeling Madonna, Crystal Waters and Aaliyah in the clip, and you can definitely see a little something from each in this video that looks like it was in fact shot in the early '90s. I can even see a touch of Queen Latifah's "Come Into My House" and Jomanda's "Got A Love For You" in Azealia's visual mix. It's unknown what direction her sound will go in when she releases her debut album, Broke with Expensive Taste, but I wouldn't be the least bit mad if she continued to keep hip-house alive for a little longer.
