BusCrates Takes You To 'FunkTropolis'

As an '80's baby, it's imperative that I indulge in things up that recall the day-glo decade so, naturally, gobbling up BusCrates' 16-bit Ensemble FunkTropolis EP was a sweet treat indeed. The Pittsburgh beat savant derives from his staple boombap sound and serves up a heaping helping of the '80s. With all the staple instrumental tools of the decade, he crafts a five-track set that is jammed packed at the seams with squiggly and spindly grooves that no doubt take unmistakable cues from electro-funk machines like Fatback Band and The System. Available through Bandcamp for a mere $4, FunkTropolis further keeps in mind its influence as it harbors a remake of the Valentine Brothers1983 vocodoer escapade,"Computer Boogie," that sounds so out-of-time, but so in-time -- if you catch my drift. While I missed out on all the great clubbing that was going on during the early 1980s (forgive me for you can't really breakdance and boogaloo in Pampers) these poppin' n' lockin' instrumentals revitalize the sound for the 21st Century club kids so that we can have a little taste of what's past. The beat surely does go on once you dive into this.
