Bounce-Worthy: Douyé

It was a typical morning at SBHQ when I received an email about Nigeria-born, Los Angeles-based songstress Douyé. Combining R&B, jazz and soul, Douyé's style is a throwback to the adult contemporary sounds of the early '90s, but with a modern twist. Though I've been known to be hypercritical, her song "Til Morning Comes" stopped me in my tracks. The track, which will automatically put you in the mind of Sade or maybe even early Chanté Moore, is a sultry, smoky groove that's further enhanced by Douyé's subtle delivery. As happens when I discover an artist who has so impressed me, I began scouring the 'net for more. That's how I discovered that "Til Morning Comes" was just a taste of her upcoming sophomore album. Her official SoundCloud page reveals a host of musical treasures, especially her tribute to Fela Kuti "So Much Love." Borrowing a few of the Afrobeat pioneer's signature sounds -- a body-moving bass line, rhythmic guitars, vibrant horns and kinetic percussion -- Douyé pays homage to Fela but still manages to find her own voice and sound within Fela's framework. Though there's no official release date or title for her project just yet, those anticipating its release can expect it later this year. While we wait for more definite word, check out "Til Morning Comes" below and hit the bounce to hear "So Much Love" and see a behind-the-scenes video of the making of the track.
