Sean J. Rankine Is 'Here' & It's Time To Take Notice

Sometimes a song comes to your attention completely by accident, but ends up making a big impression. In the case of British vocalist Sean J. Rankine's "(Love Is) Here Now," it made my day. While 2012 will surely go down as "the year of the female solo star (and Frank Ocean), there are a plethora of up-and-coming male artists vying for attention, each trying to offer something fresh, something new, something edgy. That is all well and good, but sometimes you don't need to come with something left of center, sometimes something familiar is just as good, especially if done well. That is exactly what Sean has delivered with his debut single, a smooth slice of modern soul -- no I'm gonna go right ahead and tag this one with the dreaded "neo-soul" label -- that sounds like it could have come out in the genre's late-'90's/early-'00's heyday. Everything from the production -- courtesy of Justin Atherley -- to the instrumentation, down to Sean's vocal style recalls early Maxwell, Bilal or Raphael Saadiq. This song is apparently a prelude to a full EP due later this year and I for one cannot wait to get my hands on it. "(Love Is) Here Now" is available via Bandcamp on a name your price basis, so what are you waiting for?
