Ronald Isley Wants To Take You To A 'Dinner And A Movie'

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone in the soul universe who reinvents their career better than Ronald Isley. Starting with the legendary funk and soul of The Isley Brothers, to his classic work with Angela Winbush and then on to his stint as Mr. Biggs with R. Kelly, Mr. Isley has staying power. After some hard times, Ronald Isley is back with the simmering single "Dinner and a Movie." The strength of Isley's voice lies not in its power, but in its subtlety, restraint and flexibility. This song is definitely one for the steppers out there who want to sail away on a nice groove. The production is modern enough to sound new, but nostalgic enough to remind people of definitive midtempo hits like "For the Love of You (Part 1 & 2)" and "Footsteps in Dark (Part 1 & 2)." My beef with Mr. Isley's contemporaries in the modern urban adult contemporary space, such as Charlie Wilson, is that they seem to go over the top by screaming the song or engaging in materialistic bragging. Not that Isley is innocent (the pimp cane was always necessary, though), but here he doesn't have to offer a woman the world, only a cool introduction and an invitation to dinner and a movie.
