Do We Want What Kilo Kish Has To 'Give'?

There was a time when some people thought the most successful singer coming out of the boy band era would be Jordan Knight. His infectious 1999 jam "Give It To You" was a platinum hit reaching the top 10 of many charts. Unfortunately, his follow up projects never achieved the same success. Kilo Kish has dug up some old carnival and school dance memories with her cover of Knight's "Give It To You," but although the nostalgia started when I saw the title, it honestly ended as soon as the song started. I may have not listened to the song in ages, but this version is almost unrecognizable as a cover. It's dark, brooding and dramatic. A couple listens in and the song had grown on me, but I could not be upset at anyone who found the deviation from the spirit of the original off-putting. Usually, a cover (no matter how different) allows me to instantly recall words, hooks and choruses that I thought I had forgotten. The direct cause of my slight disorientation upon first listen to Kish's "Give It 2 You" stems from my expectations about what I was going to hear. I found that I liked the song more when I listened to it for what it was, not what I wanted it to be.
