'Get Away' With De La Soul

De La Soul proves that in a genre filled with group beefs and break-ups that they have the longevity of Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee with the release of "Get Away (Featuring The Spirit of the Wu)," the first offering from their next album, You're Welcome, coming out this fall. The song features Wu-Tang Clan's "Intro" from disc two of Wu-Tang Forever when RZA had some of the most profound two minutes ever recorded as he talked about the current state of hip hop circa 1997. De La brilliantly uses that recording as the base to construct a hard-pounding drum pattern (think the classic drums from Mountain's "Long Red") on "Get Away." The video directed Lenny Bass and Kris Merc uses an innovative visual of the crew rapping while in a Rubik's Cube proving that somewhere there's a hip-hop metaphor lying the midst of the creativity.
