'I Hope' Rebecca Ferguson Cheers Up Soon

Rebecca Ferguson's new single "I Hope" will be released on November 24th, and she has recorded a live video version for our eager consumption. There's a certain formulaic look to the setting, but the video finds Rebecca in strong voice, with her smokey tones wrapping themselves around the lyrics beautifully. Yet there seems to be something missing from her performance. While I understand the song is somber and thoughtful, something just doesn't connect with me. Her voice is so expressive, but here her physical and facial expressions barely register. Apart from proving that she has the vocal chops to perform live (and she undoubtedly does), I'm just not sure what it adds to my enjoyment of the song. Rebecca and the band seem under instructions to look as downcast as possible, while the backing singers provide the only moments of warmth and bring much needed animation to the proceedings. However, despite this lackluster showing, when Rebecca's new album Freedom is released on December 2nd, and, with songs like this, I'm sure it will find it's way into my Christmas stocking.
