We Love This Reginald Omas Mamode IV EP, 'Do You?'

I first came across the track "Do You?" on Gilles Peterson's excellent Brownswood Bubblers Ten compilation, which dropped back in August. The track's intergalactic funk vibe, coupled with the half-sung, half-spoken lyrics, had me reaching for the tracklist and making a mental note that I needed to do a little digging on Reginald Omas Mamode IV (the coolest name to emerge in 2013? I think so). Fast forward to today, and I still hadn't got round to checking him out but, as luck would have it, his Do You? EP dropped into my SoundCloud stream so I decided to give it a spin. The five-track collection certainly adheres to the sound found on the set's lead single, it's all laid back funk with slightly woozy, murmured vocals -- à la Bilal -- and plenty of bass and synth to keep things interesting. Although London-based Mamode may not possess the strongest vocals in the world, based on this EP at least, when paired with his irresistible beats the result is so much more than the sum of its parts. Hit the bounce to check out the full EP, then head on over to Bandcamp to pick up a copy for your collection. If you are in need of an antidote to the current onslaught of holiday music then you may just have found it.
