The Soul Rebels Prove They Have The 'Power' On New Mixtape

The relationship between brass bands and hip hop goes back as far as I can remember. Growing up in New Orleans, the two frequently joined forces at every corner of the city, ranging from block parties to concert halls. So for me, The Soul Rebels' latest project is as naturally N'awlins as having gumbo for dinner and beignets for dessert. Earlier this week, the band dropped the Power = Power mixtape, which features their take on popular songs in addition to a few original tunes. Kanye West's "Touch the Sky," Nicki Minaj's "Moment for Life" and Drake's "Headlines" get the brass band treatment on the mixtape, which is available for free download on the group's Bandcamp page. While Bruno Mars and Jay Z are also covered on the project, it's their reworking of Daft Punk's hit single, "Get Lucky" that serves as the album's highlight. Featuring Nola's own Big Freedia, the song is transformed into a boisterous bounce song that almost made me shut my office door and twerk somethin' no Miley Cyrus. Luckily for me (and my job), I was able to maintain my decorum in the workplace. But don't take my word for it, give Power = Power a spin then head on over to their Bandcamp page to cop it for free 99.
