February 7th is a day that hip-hop heads know all too well because it is the birthday of the one and only J Dilla. Today is especially memorable because it would have marked his 40th birthday had he lived to see it. The rapper/producer succumbed to the autoimmune disease lupus in 2006 and has become an oft-celebrated legend in death. The celebrations are in full effect today on Dilla Day, with his hometown of Detroit doing it up big with a concert tonight at The Fillmore Detroit with his former group Slum Village as one of the headliners.
Just in time for the festivities, Slum has released a new track that reminds us why we loved them and Jay Dee in the first place. "Yes Yes" finds Illa J, Young RJ, T3 and Jay Dee trading verses and on his patented production. The only complaint is that that the mix sounds like a rough cut or demo, but otherwise it's good to hear all these cats flowing together on this lighthearted rap about the ladies. We'll gladly take what we can get to keep Dilla's memory going and his music playing.
