It’s become commonplace over the past six or seven years for soul and hip-hop artists to embrace the sounds of electronic dance music. The argument can be made that such artists have always performed and even invented some of the key EDM genres in decades past, but we digress. Still, Eric Benet was never one of the acts you associated with electronic rhythms. Nor was he the one you expected to come out with a remix project that’s a bit off-center. And that’s when he surprised us, announcing his European release, The Other One. The album features a slew of reinterpreted tracks from 2012’s The One courtesy of Afropeans — a seeming alias of German house DJ Mousse T., who gave us the catchy and risqué club anthem "Horny '98" in 1998.

Benet, who says he was inspired by a recent European tour to experiment with The Other One, has released “Lay It Down (The Afropeans Revisit).” The already anthemic track is bolstered with bigger bass and canyon-echoing vocals and gets stripped of its acoustic properties. But the simplicity does transfer over to the music video, in which Eric sings in front of a white screen while a young woman goes from despondent to triumphant to independent underneath Benet’s inspiring lyrics and the skyscrapers of the big city.

While Benet’s history of crooning might make this track seem a bit jarring, the artistic scenery in the clip helps to make the transition to this new sound more palatable. Give it two or three plays, and you’ll be pleased to make the acquaintance of his experimental sound.
