Hang Out With Meshell Ndegeocello's Unconventional 'Friends'

For those of you anticipating Meshell Ndegeocello's Comet, Come to Me as much as we are, we've got a little something special for you. Meshell has released another track from the album, her cover of Whodini's 1984 classic "Friends." Being that this is Meshell, you know that the cover won't be a straightforward one, and she delivers on that expectation. Starting with a slight Middle Eastern flair at its onset courtesy of a spare guitar riff, the track soon spins into funky bass and electric guitar before Meshell delves into the familiar chorus. And from there, she infuses a bit of everything into the wobbly groove as she distorts her voice to sound like multiple people throughout the verses, becoming the different friends that she speaks on. Trust us, you definitely won't confuse Meshell's bold, ballsy take with the original as it has got a verve and style that's without a doubt all its own. Check out "Friends" and let us know if you're feeling the spin Meshell has put on it.
