Get 'Free' With Max Marshall

Max Marshall Pink Blue

As anybody with ears will tell you, some of the best R&B music is coming not from American shores (though there are some really great things happening here, too) but from across the pond. One of those treasures is Max Marshall, a Baltimore native who has found her place in the London scene,  who's been bubbling up for the better part of two years now with EPs and singles. The songstress' latest single is "Be Free," which interpolates quite a bit of the Deniece Williams classic of the same name. It's not a straight up cover, however. Max borrows a few of Deniece's words and the warm, familiar horns of the original's chorus and lays them over a hot, Disclosure-esque house groove. The result is a modern pop/R&B track that brings more than its fair share of heat.
