I Am A Camera Gives Beyoncé A 'Pretty' Makeover

Beyonce Trophy Room

While I surprisingly enjoyed most of Beyoncé's self-titled fifth album, there were some numbers that I found myself skipping through. One of them was the Sia-penned album opener "Pretty Hurts." Sure, the song's heart was in the right place, preaching that the pursuit of physical perfection ultimately ended up hurting the pursuer in the end, but it tended to get, well, preachy and overwraught. Not exactly something that warrants multiple spins.

Perhaps that's why Bey herself commissioned London duo I Am A Camera to give the track a fresh new spin. And that they do, giving it a decidedly '80s spin that nods to the Minneapolis sound that Prince popularized. Amid knocking programmed drums and synths that both twinkle and provide an atmospheric backdrop, Beyoncé laments the plight of the pretty as I Am A Camera chops the beat and her vocals effortlessly, making this a song with a message that's definitely worth more than a few cursory listens.

If you, like me, found yourself passing over "Pretty Hurts," then you'll definitely want to check out I Am A Camera's makeover.
