'Hello World,' It's Aloe Blacc's New Video

Aloe Blacc Hello World 3

The World Cup has come and gone, but one of its inspirational anthems lives on in the form of a new music video.

Aloe Blacc visits the decrepit regions of Detroit for “Hello World (The World is Ours),” taking refuge in a rundown church while at the same time hooded youngsters scatter throughout the city. With their body language suggesting the worst, viewers tense up expecting to see a convenience store robbery, a break-in at a senior’s home, graffiti sprayed on public property and an attack on a young mother. But scripts are flipped as the young people instead turn into doers of good – handing out food to the hungry, hanging pictures for the elderly and fixing a loose wheel on a stroller. Stereotypes are further broken down when the finished piece of tagged artwork is shown and the kids have a coming out party by turning down the hoods. The smiling faces offer a sense of being relatable while also relishing in the “gotcha” moment that “you were scared, but we didn’t do anything.”

Not that any of this imagery should come as a surprise, given that the song’s lyrics embrace all things uplifting. But it doesn’t prevent the “big reveal” as the clip winds down from being a breath of fresh air or even evoking warm feelings or hopes of a better world. It will also most definitely bring to mind Trayvon Martin and seems to point to the potential lost from the death of one so young but so strongly profiled.
