Christian Gregory ‘Won’t Get Nowhere’ Without A Fight

Christian Gregory Wont Get Nowhere Still

Christian Gregory has been generating quite the buzz lately. The Bounce-Worthy artist recently released his well-received debut EP, Count On You, along with a nostalgia-inducing video for the funky title track. Next up are the visuals for his simmering ballad “Won’t Get Nowhere.” This melodic, slow burn was love at first listen. The song’s crescendo -- driven by the feral screams of a fuzz guitar and highlighted by Gregory’s sensual falsetto wail -- provides a satisfying climax that has already invited comparisons to Prince. Needless to say, I eagerly hit the play button to satisfy my curiosity on how this would be adapted to the small screen.

The video centers on the lean, muscular singer (an avid Muay Thai fighter, rumor has it) as he pensively prepares for a boxing match. Cool, I can dig the metaphor that true love and lasting happiness are worth fighting for. As we get a ringside view of Mr. Gregory getting the snot beat out of him, what puzzles me is the apparent lack of “fight” in him. Doesn’t this go against everything the song is saying? “You won’t get nowhere if you give up,“ he wails but throws no jabs, blocks no punches. He just stands there and takes it. Finally, as his opponent delivers a final blow, and it looks as if our dear champion is out for the count, he musters up the strength to get back up. Personally, I would’ve been happy to see a clichéd Rocky III-style freeze frame at the end, but I digress.

Check out the visuals below, and decide if this is pugilism as metaphor or malarkey. Either way, the song still hits. So do you yourself a favor and download the entire EP on iTunes or Amazon before the end of the account.
