Get Familiar With Johnny Stimson’s Latest ‘Obsession’

Johnny Stimson’s penchant for creating danceable '80s-inspired, electro-synth pop generated lots of buzz back in 2013. But it wasn’t until he slowed things down with his sexy groove, “SO. GOOD.,” earlier this year that we really sat up and took notice of this rising star. Since then, the Dallas native has been busy touring, but he’s also taken some time to get back into the studio in the hopes of making us dance again. First with the electro-synth tune, “Sugar,” and now with his current single, “Obsession.”

Upon first listen, the keyboards slightly remind me of Howard Johnson’s “So Fine” (with a touch of Junior Senior’s “Move Your Feet”), while the guitar at times reminded me of Slave’s “Watching You.” And while I’m sure you’re scratching your head at my references (I know what I heard!), just trust me when I say that Mr. Stimson has gone and created another catchy tune. Along with the instrumentals, the singer uses his energetic falsetto to serve up some '80s realness with a side of blue-eyed soul.

While there’s no official word on when we can expect a full album, I’m eager to see what’s next for this indie singer. In the meantime, he’s offering a free download of “Obsession” if you “heart” the song on Hype Machine and then e-mail him that you’ve done so. Better yet, just go ahead and check out his catalog, currently available on iTunes.
