Mayer Hawthorne Takes 'The Stars Are Ours' To The Disco

Mayer Hawthorne recently wowed us with his take on Rihanna and Mikky Ekko's "Stay," but now it's one of his own tunes that's getting a new rendition.

"The Stars Are Ours (Mayer's Disco Version)" flips the Pharrell Williams-produced original upside down by kicking things up a notch, much like the Detroit Swindle remix did. Gone is the stadium rock feel that hovers over the adult contemporary-meets-'80s sitcom theme song melody. In its place is a slowly building drum beat spiced by some lightly shaken percussion and a proper disco song's grooving bass line.

The combination of the musical elements allows Hawthorne's high-reaching notes to soar into the sky and embrace the surrounding microcosm of the cosmic. But could it be that this tune has found more fitting sonics? Well, according to Mayer's SoundCloud, "A good song is a good song regardless of what style it is. I wanted to test my songwriting to see if it would hold up when performed a completely different way." We think he not only succeeded, but may have also crafted something DJs can play to excite dance floors.
