There’s some good news from the old school, but you’re going to have to pay attention to keep up with the players.

Surface -- the trio of flutist David “Pic” Conley, guitarist David Townsend and vocalist Bernard Jackson -- is a group you likely remember from the late ’80s and early ’90s. Certainly more than one school dance rocked “Happy,” “Shower Me with Your Love” and “The First Time.” Sadly, Townsend died in 2005, though the group had been disbanded shortly after releasing its final album, Love Zone, back in 1998.

Fast forward to today and Re Surface, a new project by Conley and singer John Feva, seeks to continue the group’s legacy.

“Say I Do” is a quiet storm tune that fits in well with the aforementioned hits and is a more than decent continuation of the sound stylized by Surface, the key of which was Pic’s signature flute skills. The vocals and the lyrics don’t try to be contemporary, instead sticking with what Surface does best and succeeding in making it sound fresh.

With some other tunes floating around the Internet in snippet form, it looks like Re Surface is ready to reconnect with fans in 2014. Check out and support the group on CD Baby.
