The SoulBounce Q&A: Adrian Marcel Talks Touring, Love And His Upcoming Album

SB: Do you feel like there's a lot of pressure to be everybody else since you're a young, up-and-coming R&B singer?

AM: Not at all, I don’t feel pressure at all. I don’t even think about it like that. I never walk around like, sometimes they have to call me and tell me what’s new with my music because [after] I put something out, I’m on to the next. I’m getting ready for the next single, for the next project. When we did 7 Days Of Weak, we were already on Weak After Next. When we started Weak After Next, we were already in the works for GMFU. So for me, I don’t try to be like anybody else because I can’t be them. They’ve mastered who they are and I shouldn’t want to be them, you know? I’m who I am and I’m enough.

SB: You are enough, don’t let anyone tell you different.

AM: I said that like I was real insecure, like I’m in a group. "I’m enough!" [laughs]

SB: Right, like you read a few self-help books. But that’s good that you help yourself. You released "Spending the Night Alone" and no one wants to do that since it's cuffing season. What was your inspiration for the song?

AM: You know, very simple, shout out to Rico Love. I think that he really embodied who Adrian Marcel is. I’ve had many nights alone, missing a special someone because of mistakes that I’ve made or they may have made, but when you get accustomed to someone’s touch, you get accustomed to someone’s scent, you get accustomed to their aura and then it just disappears, it just vanishes almost it’s like it’s not that I’m gonna stalk you but I need a little closure.

SB: [laughs] What?

AM: So I’m gonna drive past your mama’s house a few times, do about 10 laps around…

SB: To get your closure?

AM: To get my closure. And if I see you out there with somebody else, then it might be bad. Nah, I’m playing. But nah that’s really all it is, just straight to the point, the name I think says it all. I can’t do this anymore, just come back and fill this empty space that’s to my right or left.
