It's safe to say that Jarrod Lawson ended the year with new legion of fans. His cover versions of popular songs are amazing. But it's the sheer brilliance of his eponymous debut album that transported him from the Portland music scene to worldwide stages in a manner of weeks. Less than halfway through the album, you're almost angry at yourself for not knowing about him sooner. The singer/songwriter/musician blew us away with his mix of soul, jazz and gospel, displaying and amazing vocal range and stellar musical compositions. It's hard to pick favorites, but "Everything I Need," "All That Surrounds," "Sleepwalkers" and "Music & Its Magical Way" are a good place to start. -- B. Cakes
