No one expected “Slow Jamz” to be the hit song it was. Twista at the time had been an okay rapper with no real hits. Kanye had released “Through the Wire” and had some underground rap features, but nothing close to the brand he would become. Amazingly, the song ended up catapulting both careers. However, it was Kanye who shined brightest, delivering memorable lines, such as, “Got a light-skinned friend, look like Michael Jackson / Got a dark-skinned friend, look like Michael Jackson.”
In addition to producing the lead single off both their albums, Kanye also produced Kamikaze’s second single, “Overnight Celebrity,” a stand-out track that reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped Twista get over the hump of being a one-hit wonder. Kanye’s contributions to Twista’s fourth album not only helped build momentum for Kanye, the producer, but Kanye the artist, as well.
