Fresh out of high school, Kanye’s first paid production job and rapping feature was with a local Chicago artist named Grav. The youngster ran up on Grav after a concert insisting he let him do some production on his album. “I knew he was a child prodigy back then,” said Grav, who let the young Mr. West contribute a handful of tracks to his debut album and actually drop a few bars on the track “Line for Line.”

Ye sold his first beat to Grav for an alleged $8,800. Kanye spent the money on some Polo clothes and his first Jesus piece, which he would later sell to No I.D. to finance his trip to New York to officially launch his career.
