One of the highlights of any music awards show is watching up-and-coming artists get some well-deserved time in the spotlight. As in previous years, last night's BET Awards used their Music Matters showcase to introduce "the next BET superstars." With just two short minutes to make an impression, retro soul singer Andra Day took to the stage to perform her latest single, "Rise Up." In addition to Day, this year's Nissan-sponsored showcase also featured Avery Wilson.
Ms. Day looked flawless as usual, with her perfectly coifed hair, bold makeup and vintage chic attire. But in an evening filled with high-profile reunions, collaborations and much talked-about performances, we're not sure that this song selection was the best way to capture the audience's attention. Sure she sounded okay, and we certainly appreciated the positive lyrics, but overall, Andra and the band left us feeling a bit underwhelmed. To be fair, she had a pretty busy weekend, having performed at the Pre-Awards Dinner and then on the AT&T Lounge Stage for the BET Experience on the night before. But we still wish she could've shown a bit more of that spark that endeared us to "Forever Mine." Nevertheless, we 're still excited for her upcoming debut album Cheers to the Fall, which is currently available for pre-order. If you're heading to the ESSENCE Festival this weekend, be sure to catch Andra's performance in the Hot Right Now Superlounge on Sunday, July 5th.
