Seen & Heard at B-Flat in Berlin, Germany

It's rather difficult to compose compositions that are extremely technical and yet remain relevant to the average music listener. Robert Glasper, D'Angelo (welcome back!!!), Bilal, Ledisi and a cadre of others have managed to do so successfully. I believe that jazz/hip hop band Seraleez is on a similar path. Although the venue was lacking in the area of sound (possibly because of strict German sound ordinance regulations), the band really impressed me with their clever tunes that still managed to be hip and really memorable. The lead singer Christine Seraphin's warm, inviting presence on stage and her powerful vocals added a refreshing touch to the arrangements that spanned multiple styles ranging from rock to jazz. I also found rather special the haunting ambiance, sophisticated musicality and expert usage of effects pedals sprinkled onto each tune by saxophonist Jonathan Strauch. Here's a smoking hot fan-captured video clip from one of their recent performances at the XJAZZ Festival in Berlin. Stay in the know on Seraleez on Facebook and SoundCloud.
