Brandy Gets No Love As A New York City Subway Performer

As many transplants to New York City will attest, most of the myths that involve the "rude New Yorker" stereotypes just aren't true. However, what is true is that most New York crowds are pretty tough. It's a lesson that even superstars like Brandy have had to learn.

The singer, who's winning rave reviews playing Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway, found out the hard way that the denizens of NYC's subway system aren't as welcoming as the adoring Broadway audiences to which she's grown accustomed. Donning a hoodie and shades to go incognito, the singer boarded what looks like the 2/3 line on the Upper West Side in route to her gig in Midtown. While straphanging, she decided it was the perfect time to belt out her rendition of "Home," the centerpiece of the hit Broadway show The Wiz. Brandy's rendition of the song, though purposely hokey, sounded as beautiful as you'd expect from a GRAMMY-winning singer. But when she was done, instead of an adoring public she was greeted resigned indifference. Ouch. "What y'all thought of that?" she asked. "Y'all thought that was cool? Hello?"

Though most of the crowd was silent, she did happen to get some performance pointers from one man, who said that she needed to "be more over the top." Maybe it's something that she should take into consideration. In the meantime, we guess she'll have to give up her subway performer dreams and just keep wowing folks in Chicago until August 2nd.
