Denai Moore
Seen & Heard at Privat Club in Berlin, Germany

A wunderkind of sorts, the budding multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and singer Denai Moore is a very intriguing artist. She isn't very talkative on stage, a la Sade Adu. Maybe to add to her mystique, or maybe because she's a little shy? Whatever the reason, the richness of her vocal tone and the stories embedded in her lyrics will do all the talking for her -- and they said a lot during her show at Berlin's Privat Club. Akin to the school of legendary singer-songwriters James Taylor and Janis Ian, Denai's flare for writing was embodied by the strength and haunting beauty of her final tune of the evening, "No Light." Her top-notch band rendered a performance on par with the superb quality level of her recordings. If you closed your eyes, you would think you were listening to the album, which is not an easy feat due to the multiple ambient factors that can impede live sound. Much respect to the sound engineering team at the Privat Club.

If you're ever in Berlin, you definitely should check out this club. They program really eclectic musical acts. The design of the venue is very intimate; you'll feel like you're inside of someone's house. There are small rooms adjacent to the performance area with couches and lamps where people can relax and have drinks or chat. It's a very cool concept. You're bound to find a club or bar in unconventional places in Berlin, in general. A friend told me there was a bar made out of an abandoned school bus a few years ago. Gotta love Berlin.
