Just before the start of summer, Eryn Allen Kane used her voice to command our attention. Both her fiery, gospel-tinged delivery on "Have Mercy" and her ethereal harmonies on Prince's "Baltimore" stirred something within us, leaving us with no choice but to dub her Bounce-Worthy. As she prepares for the forthcoming release of her anticipated debut Aviary, she's giving us another reason to acknowledge her greatness with her latest track, "Slipping."
In contrast to the a capella sonacy of "Have Mercy," Eryn gets an assist from the band this time around. But the relaxed guitar-driven arrangement never oversteps, leaving a clear path for Eryn to showcase the dynamic strength and delicate subtleties of her voice. As for the song's meaning, Eryn recently revealed to FADER, "I'd like for people to choose what it means to them. It's important that I give that freedom to the listener." It seems she took a similar approach to the visuals, which she co-directed with Verluxe.
We follow Eryn as she journeys a scenic road by foot. Whether she's following someone or taking an introspective stroll is unclear, but she illuminates the screen as her facial expressions disclose a range of emotions. The approach is effective, and eventually it feels like we are walking, running and falling right along with her. Like the song itself, this video is a splendid example of artistic simplicity.
