3. The First Soul Train Awards Soul Cypher Set It Off

Taking a cue from the cyphers during BET Hip Hop Awards, the first-ever Soul Cypher popped off at the Soul Train Awards 2015 with Badu as DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown on the wheels of steel, Omar Edwards on keys and Chrisette Michele, K-Ci of Jodeci fame, Lalah Hathaway and Eddie LeVert of The O'Jays on vocals. Oh, and they sang over the Mobb Deep "Shook Ones" beat. Yes, this really happened and it was off the chain.

OK, well maybe not everyone was off the chain (we're looking at you, K-Ci) and the match up of these four vocalists was interesting to say the least, but after choosing Badu to host, this was the second genius move on this year's Soul Train Awards. The Soul Cypher gave this select cross-generational group of singers space to let loose, which they did, especially Chrisette and Lalah who flexed their chops with soulful ad-libs and scatting. With these singers, '70s soul, '90s R&B, neo soul and jazz was well represented. Badu even joined in at the end with a little "On & On" for good measure.

We're already hyped for the Soul Train Awards 2016 just for the Soul Cypher alone and can't wait to see who they get to participate. We already have a long wish list!
