Craig David has been creeping up on a comeback since 2014 by releasing new music here and there, but it wasn't until he dropped the bomb of "When the Bassline Drops" with Big Narstie last month that the comeback became real. The silky-voiced garage innovator thoroughly impressed with the dance floor-ready tune, but that's just the tip of what David has in store for us.
David recently swung by the Capital XTRA studios in the UK, where he is also a DJ, to chop it up on another show. After chatting for a spell with Roman Kemp, the DJ let Craig know that they had an instrumental mix of tracks ready for him to bless with his vocals. The freestyle session started off innocently enough with Craig singing along to the tune of his current hit single "When the Bassline Drops" and sounding absolutely perfect in the process. Not that we ever doubted his skills, but his live vocals were amazing. Oh, but the shock and awe didn't end there.
The mix fit a little of Drake's "Hotline Bling" instrumental in underneath Craig's butter smooth vocals before segueing into the beat for Stormzy's "Shut Up." And then the unthinkable happened. Craig David freestyle rapped and shut it down. David spit a good 45 seconds worth of jaw dropping hot fire. Who knew that Craig David had bars? If this singing thing ever doesn't work out, he might just have a future in hip hop.
