If you've been paying attention to HBO's Vinyl, then you already know that the show has been recreating the music scene of the '70s on and off-screen. That, of course, means utilizing classic tracks and featuring portrayals of iconic artists. But they've also tapped modern artists to recreate the sounds of the era, including artists like Charlie Wilson channeling the funk of Sly Stone on "Alright Lady." For this week's most recent episode, the show delved into disco and the multi-generational trio of Alex Newell, DJ Cassidy and Nile Rodgers to recreate the unique sound on "Kill The Lights."
Cassidy, who's no stranger to recreating sounds of the past, lays down a pretty convincing disco groove, complete with dance-ready production and a bit of rhythm guitar magic form Nile himself. However, what keeps this number soaring is Alex Newell's vocal. The one-time Glee star channels Sylvester on the track about getting closer on the dance floor, delivering a disco diva-worthy performance that keeps the party going. He also evokes that feeling in the song's accompanying video, which is disco overload. From the flashing lights, hot pants, Afros, pulsing grooves and, of course, spinning vinyl.
