Ava DuVernay & OWN's 'Queen Sugar' Sets Second Season Premiere & Heads To Hulu

There's been no shortage of good television to watch these days. Thanks to successful and popular new shows such as HBO's Insecure, FX's Atlanta, WGN's Underground and OWN's Queen Sugar, we've laughed, we've cried and picked sides in our living room (#TeamLawrence forever). While we will still have to wait until 2018 for the second season of Atlanta, Underground's new season is already underway and now we know which show will make its return to the small screen next and it comes in the form of the Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey-fronted Queen Sugar. The show will make its second bow in a two-night event on OWN airing Tuesday, June 20th and Wednesday, June 21st.

The award-winning series, which films in Louisiana and features an all-female directorial team, centers on the Bordelon family as they fight to turn their family's struggling sugarcane plantation around while also trying to balance their respective personal drama. When we last left off, successful Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) was in the midst of a messy, public divorce; community organizer Nova (Rutina Wesley) was torn between her married lover and her former girlfriend; and the baby boy, Ralph Angel (newly-crowned heartthrob Kofi Siriboe) was struggling with living the straight life while proving he had turned his life around. Add in a ton of family secrets and a racist, crooked town that seems to be working against them, and it is easy to see why the drama earned a NAACP Image Award for Best Drama Series; was named the Television Show of the Year by both AABF and AAFCA; and was nominated for a People's Choice Award in the Favorite Cable Drama category. And the show's soundtrack? Well, you already know our love for that and the work of composer Meshell Ndegeocello and music director Morgan Rhodes runs deep, and we have the playlist to prove it.

If you missed out on the first season or just want to brush up on past episodes before the premiere of season two, then it'll be easier than ever to do so thanks to a new deal between Hulu and Warner Bros. The deal gives the streaming service exclusive rights to the complete first season. Season one will begin streaming April 21st, and each subsequent season will also stream exclusively on Hulu following their initial season run on OWN. Season two of Queen Sugar returns to OWN June 20th and 21st at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will air regularly each Wednesday at the same time.
