Gallant & John Legend Offer Up A Soulful 'Overload'

R&B up-and-comer Gallant continues to impress even more than a year after his debut, Ology, was released. The Columbia, Maryland, native is currently introducing himself to large audiences as the opening act for the U.S. leg of crooner John Legend's Darkness And Light Tour. He has also kept busy by providing fans peaks into the creative process with his "In The Room" YouTube series. The series has seen him collaborate with a few notables, including Sufjan Stevens and Seal. For the latest installment in the series, Gallant teams up with his tourmate to create a new take on Darkness And Light track "Overload."

For "Overload," originally a duet between Legend and Miguel, the two talented fellas rework it for a stripped-down, acoustic take. John, as usual, sits at the keys as the piano chords set the song's tone as he delivers the song's opening verse and Gallant provides supporting ad-libs. Gallant then delivers the verse that Miguel originally sang, though his take involves quite a bit more falsetto. While too much falsetto can be a bad thing, Gallant knows how to use his voice to great effect, adding a harmonic contrast not present on the original version. As soon as all is sung and done, the collaborators check out the playback of the one-take recording before both agreeing that their take is dope and the camera fades to black.

With this, touring, his recent Tiny Desk performance and single "Cave Me In," we can't help but think that Gallant may be cooking something new up in the near future. Until we get some confirmation on that, though, enjoy the chemistry between him and Johh Legend "In The Room."
