Created by the innovative DJ Beverly Bond, championed through media by Debra Lee, soundtracked by an electrifying all-girl band and hosted by homegirl-in-our-heads Taraji P. Henson, Black Girls Rock! 2017 once again showed us how necessary it is to have this type of platform – not just for us, but by us. The fact that our brothas were in the house was an added boost. Especially because they not only showed up, they showed out as well.

#SoulBae Anthony Hamilton captivated the audience with an expressive rendition of his crowd-pleasing hit "Best of Me." Flanked by dancing couples and ably supported by his harmonic background trio The Hamiltones, the R&B singer gave us his best and had us two-stepping the whole way through. The performance was further enhanced when Anthony and the fellas flipped the modern classic with an infusion of old school soul by way of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Brazilian Rhyme" and Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing." From start to finish, it was nothing but love and good vibes and served as the perfect performance to lead into Auntie Maxine Waters being presented with the Black Girls Rock! Social Humanitarian award.
