Fans Petition To Replace Confederate Monument With Statue Of Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott

After the events of Charlottesville, VA, where "white nationalists" violently protested the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, we have been overwhelmed with words and images of hate. However, activist Nathan Coflin seeks to do more than just be a voice in the crowd but to change the discussion to something more positive. Coflin went on Change.org and petitioned to have a Confederate monument in his hometown of Portsmouth, VA replaced with a statue of Katy Perry's BFF, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. While a petition for a Missy statue is humorous, the idea isn't that incredulous. For one, Elliott has a very inspiring story: a young Black girl who grew up in poverty fled an abusive situation with her mother and eventually grew up to become one of the most iconic and influential pop stars of all time. In addition, the petition adds some much needed levity to the fraught discussion of race and politics. We think a Missy statue is something that people on both sides of the aisle can get behind. In fact, more than 30,000 people have signed the petition so far. Missy just might be in there like swimwear! We're just wondering which version of Missy they would immortalize in bronze? "I Can't Stand The Rain" Garbage Bag Missy or Adidas Track Suit Diva Missy? #HeHeHeHeHowBoutDat!
