Chance The Rapper Criticizes Chicago's $95 Million Police Academy

When making major civic decisions, city council members expect to hear from concerned citizens, but it's rare that those citizens have the clout of the rising rap star Chance the Rapper. The civic-minded rapper appeared before a recent meeting of the Chicago City Council this week to criticize the aldermen's decision to build a $95 million public safety training facility for the Chicago Police Department. “What is y’all doing?,” he questioned during the public participation session.“Financially, this proposed plan doesn’t make sense. We don’t have $95 million. They’re just asking for $10 million today to purchase the land. But we don’t have the rest of the money to do it, so why let them go ahead with this right now? There’s a lot of different services that need to be funded.” Despite his valid reasoning, the council still voted 48-1 to approve spending $9.6 million to purchase the land on which the CPD campus will be built, but at least Chance's presence brought much-needed attention to the issue. #PayAttentionToLocalPolitics
